We have a FB group that we have been updating daily so I am way behind in keeping things updated over here as we travel! After my last post from Beijing we attempted to fly out the next day (Sunday) to Hohhot to meet Finley on Monday but Mother Nature had other plans. After 14+ hours in the Beijing airport and being repeatedly told our flight was delayed but not cancelled it was eventually cancelled. 200 cancelled flights, our luggage is in there somewhere!
A couple of bright spots during the no good, horrible, very bad day...Chen Chen made a friend and they exchanged info so they could become pen pals.
This young lady was truly an angel. No one spoke English at the airport and all the announcements in the section we were waiting were in Mandarin. She spoke English and kept us updated on what was happening, asked about our flight status for us several times and even brought us water. I may have hugged her while crying when we left her.
We spent an additional night in Beijing and took a nearly 10 hour train ride early on Monday morning so we could still make it to Hohhot by Monday night to meet Finley on the day we had planned. There were no flights out for a couple of days so a crowded, uncomfortable, very "real" train ride was our only option. Our "seats" were those top, cramped bunks which are called "hard sleepers" for a reason. Luckily there were small, uncomfortable fold down seats on the aisle that Bob and I perched on for the entire trip.
We finally got to Hohhot Monday night, met Finley in the hotel lobby as soon as we walked in and immediately sat down to sign a stack of paperwork so we could take guardianship of her overnight until we finalized the next day. Not at all how we had envisioned our family day happening but so thankful we still made it to her on Monday! Our first dazed and tired moments as a family of 4 :)
Dinner our first night in the hotel room...
At some point I will go back and and update with more pictures and words for the last week because I love having those blog posts about out time in China with Chen Chen but right now we are just trying to make it through 'til Friday when we fly home. We have been in Guangzhou since Friday afternoon and are enjoying the slower pace and warmer temperatures. Finley is doing great! She is happy and active (oh so active!) strong willed and has personality for days....she is such a fun kid and we cannot wait to get home with her!
